Meaning of White Dove by Scorpions & Song Story

The Hungarian rock band Omega has written many wonderful songs over its half-century history, many of which are known far beyond their homeland.

The main theme of this group, by which it is recognized all over the world, is “The Girl with Pearl Hair” (Gyöngyhajú lány).

The history of creation and the meaning of the song White Dove – Scorpions

This beautiful composition, perhaps, would have been completely forgotten by everyone except Omega fans, if in 1994 the more famous rock band Scorpions did not use the music from Gyöngyhajú lány in their White Dove.

The song was written in just a week specifically for the charity single. The proceeds from its sale were given to refugees from Rwanda, which was engulfed by yet another civil war.

Since the words of the two songs have nothing in common, it is not necessary to say that White Dove is a cover of Gyöngyhajú lány. If the original is frankly lyrical, then the Scorpions version has a pronounced socio-political overtones (which did not prevent it from appearing on a huge number of collections in the spirit of the Romantic Collection).

Interesting Facts

  • The musicians of Omega have never had any claims against the Scorpions regarding the use of their music. Moreover, rock bands gave joint concerts and jointly performed White Dove.

White Dove Lyrics

A place without a name
Under a burning sky
There’s no milk and honey here
In the land of God
Someone holds a sign
It says we are human, too
And while the sun goes down
The world goes by

chorus:
white dove
Fly with the wind
Take our hope under your wings
For the world to know
That hope will not die
Where the children cry

Waves, big like a house
They’re stranded on a piece of wood
To leave it all behind
To start again
But instead of a new life
All they find is a door that’s closed
And they keep looking for
A place called hope

Can anyone tell me why
The children of the world
Have to pay the price

And now you’re telling me
You’ve seen it all before
I know that’s right but still
It breaks my heart
Well, the golden lamb we sent
Makes us feel better now
But you know it’s just a drop
In a sea of tears

White Dove Lyrics

Place without a name
Under the burning sky
Milky rivers with jelly banks
Do not flow in this God’s land
Someone is holding a poster
It says: “We are people too”
And even though the sun is setting
There is no world

Chorus:
White dove,
Fly in the wind
Take our hope under your wings
For the world to know
That hope won’t die
Where the children cry

Waves as big as a house
And they sail on them on a wooden raft,
To leave everything behind
And start again
But instead of a new life
All they see is a locked door
And they keep searching
A Place Called “Hope”

Can someone explain to me why
Children of the world
Gotta pay for this

Now you’re telling me
That I’ve seen it before
I know it is, but still
It makes me grieve
Well we sent the golden calf
And now we feel better
But, you know, it’s just a drop
In a sea of tears
