Meaning of Do You Want to Know a Secret? by The Beatles

Musical groups consisting of unmarried handsome guys are more popular with the most devoted part of the audience (that is, young fans) than groups consisting of fathers of families. Brian Epstein, manager of The Beatles, understood this as early as the middle of the last century. Therefore, he was not happy to learn in 1962 that John Lennon was going to marry, since his girlfriend Cynthia Powell was pregnant.

It was impossible to dissuade John, but Brian convinced him not to advertise the news, because the group was about to record the debut album Please Please Me, and Epstein wanted to maintain the established image of the four single Beatles. In exchange for Lennon’s silence, he allowed the newlyweds to live for some time in his secret rented apartment, which he used for love pleasures (apparently with male representatives).

The story of the song Do You Want to Know a Secret? – The Beatles

No wonder John wrote a song in this situation called Do You Want to Know a Secret? (“Do you want to know a secret?”). He later said that he was inspired by the composition I’m Wishing from the Disney cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which begins with the line Want to know a secret? When he was little, his mother often sang this song to him. At the same time, Lennon claimed that by secret he did not mean the fact of marriage, but the final realization of his love.

Do You Want to Know a Secret? performed by George Harrison. Already in 1980, Lennon said that he gave him the song, because “it only has three notes, and he was not the best singer in the world.”

I must say that Harrison was dissatisfied with his vocals, but the audience thought otherwise, and the single Do You Want to Know a Secret? rose to number two on the Billboard charts.

Interesting Facts

  • Paul McCartney was considered a co-author of the song for a long time. Lennon only after the breakup of The Beatles said that he composed it himself.
  • George Harrison said that the tune Do You Want to Know a Secret? was inspired by the track I Really Love You by The Stereos.
  • The song Do You Want to Know a Secret? also performed by another Brian Epstein band, Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas. A demo recording for them was made by Lennon himself (they say, in the toilet of a Hamburg nightclub).
  • Members of the “Secret” group named their team, inspired by this particular song.
