The Story & Meaning of When We Were Young by Dolores O’Riordan

After breaking up with her Cranberries in 2003, Dolores O’Riordan pursued a solo career. She took part in the recording of the album of the Italian singer Zucchero, worked with the composer Angelo Badalamenti on the soundtrack for the film “Evilenko” and played herself in the comedy “Click: with a remote control for life.”

In May 2007, Dolores finally pleased the fans with Are You Listening? It included the song When We Were Young (“When we were young”), published as the second single from O’Riordan’s debut solo album.

History of creation and meaning

Dolores wrote the music and lyrics herself. Many fans have decided that the lyrics of the song are memories of youth, but for the author, the main idea of the work is somewhat broader.

In an interview, O’Riordan talked about what When We Were Young was about.

…when you have babies, you begin to understand that they live as if in a closed space. And they won’t be able to go back there until they’re ten, then twelve, then into adolescence…and worries…and suddenly they’re on the next level.

To some extent, when you are a child, you are not stressed, because you only have to worry about getting dressed. I just remember when I was a child myself, and I say: “Thank you, mom, thank you, for everything you did.” I hope that my children also love and appreciate me.

Dolores O’Riordan When We Were Young Lyrics

Funny how things just tasted better
When we were young, when we were young
Funny how things just seemed so easy
when we were young

It’s been a long day x4

chorus:
I wanna get out, I wanna go home
Is anything better than you on the phone
I wanna get out, I wanna go home
Is anything better than you on the phone

I think that we weren’t always grateful
For what you’ve done, when we were young
I think that we weren’t always grateful for what you’ve done

We’ve come a long way x4

Chorus

When We Were Young lyrics by Dolores O’Riordan

It’s funny how everything tasted better
When we were young, when we were young.
It’s funny how easy it was
When we were young

It’s been a long day – 4 times

Chorus:
I want to run away, I want to go home
There is nothing better than talking to you on the phone.
I want to run away, I want to go home
There is nothing better than talking to you on the phone.

Guess we weren’t always grateful
For what you did when we were young.
I guess we weren’t always grateful for what you did.

We’ve come a long way – 4 times

Chorus
