Meaning of Oops!… I Did It Again by Britney Spears & Song Story

Surprised? Indeed, the choice is unusual, if we take into account which songs were considered in previous articles. But there were at least two reasons to write about this “masterpiece”, which, performed by Britney Spears, for me personally, is the embodiment of everything that is usually called disparagingly “pop”.

However, about them a little lower, and now, since we are talking about Oops!… I Did It Again, we must first briefly talk about the song.

The history of creation and the meaning of the song Oops!… I Did It Again

It was written by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub for Britney’s second studio album, which received the same name. The single was released by Jive Records on March 27, 2000. In general, what is sung in Oops!… I Did It Again is clear without explanation, and looking for some kind of subtext in this teenage song is just stupid.

The composition has become one of the most famous in the work of (let’s call it that) Britney. She successfully walked the charts and was even nominated for a Grammy. The video for the song, in which Spears famously dances on Mars in a tight red latex suit and falls in love with an astronaut, was also very popular with the younger generation.

Let’s watch the clip of Oops!… I Did It Again.

Did Louis Armstrong sing Oops!… I Did It Again?

Now let’s get back to what inspired me to write about Oops!… I Did It Again. In 2005, there was news that this song was performed by Louis Armstrong back in 1932. Allegedly, she became the second track on the single All of Me, which was released by the Decca studio, but then this composition did not gain fame from the public.

And now on many sites that offer music for download, you can find this “restored recording”. True, it soon became clear that the sensation was a “duck” from Shek Baker, a comedian writing for the SuperMasterPiece website. So the original is still the version performed by Britney Spears.

Oops!…I Did It Again Covers

Another reason that made me take on Oops!… I Did It Again is a cool cover of it by Palast Orchester and its leader Max Raabe. This orchestra recorded a cabaret version of the song and included it in the Super Hits album, which consists entirely of arrangements of famous compositions sustained in the same style.

Interesting Facts

  • In the clip, an astronaut gives Britney a necklace, to which she replies, “But I thought the old lady dropped it in the ocean at the end.” This phrase is an allusion to the movie Titanic.
  • During the filming of the video clip, a camera fell on Spears’ head, after which she received four stitches.
  • A huge number of parodies have been made for the song. So, one of the American radio stations recorded a track called Oops! … They Deflated Again (“Oops! … They went down again”), implying Britney’s breast implants.

Britney Spears Oops!… I Did It Again Lyrics

I think I did it again
I made you believe we’re more than just friends
Oh baby
It might seem like a crush
But it doesn’t mean that I’m serious
‘Cause to lose all my senses
That is just so typically me
Oh baby, baby

Oops!…I did it again
I played with your heart, got lost in the game
Oh baby, baby
Oops!…You think I’m in love
That I’m sent from above
I’m not that innocent

You see my problem is this
I’m dreaming away
Wishing that heroes, they truly exist
I cry, watching the days
Can’t you see I’m a fool in so many ways
But to lose all my senses
That is just so typically me
Baby, oh

Oops!…I did it again to your heart
Got lost in this game, oh baby
Oops!…You think that I’m sent from above
I’m not that innocent

Oops!… I Did It Again Britney Spears Lyrics

Looks like I did it again
I made you believe that we’re not just friends
Oh baby
It may seem like a passion
But that doesn’t mean I’m serious
‘Cause losing your mind
It looks so much like me
Oh baby baby

Oops!… I did it again
I played with your feelings and got confused myself
Oh baby baby
Oops!… You think I’m in love
that I was sent down from above
But I’m not so innocent

You see, my problem is
That I dream too much
Imagining that heroes really exist,
I cry when I face reality
Can’t you see how often I get fooled
But lose your mind
It looks so much like me
Baby, oh

Oops!… I did it again
Lost in this game, oh baby
Oops!… You think I’m sent down from above,
But I’m not so innocent
