Meaning of Mary, Did You Know? & The Story Behind

Many Christian Christmas songs were written so long ago that researchers are unable to determine either the exact date of creation or the author. But among the popular compositions there are also works composed by our talented contemporaries.

Among them is the famous Mary, Did You Know? , which is so loved by foreign performers on the eve of the New Year holidays.

The story behind of the song Mary, Did You Know?

Its lyrics were written by renowned comedian and songwriter Mark Lowry, and the music was composed by Buddy Greene.

Lowry spoke about how the idea to write a Christmas song came about:

My pastor asked me to write a Christmas program for our church called The Living Christmas Tree, and I sketched out a monologue to insert between the songs. So I began to ponder and wonder if Mary could have been aware of the power, power, and majesty that she carefully held in her arms that first Christmas. I wondered if she understood that those little hands were the same hands that scooped up oceans and shaped rivers.

I was just trying to put into words the incomprehensible. I started thinking about the questions I would ask her if I had a chance to sit and have coffee with Maria… You know, “What was it like raising God?”, “What did you know?”, “What didn’t you know?”. Over time she [песня] just arose, and I got the text

Mark also reminisced about the later history of Mary, Did You Know?:

The lyrics to the song were written in 1984 and the music was written in 1991, when during the Gaither bus tour [This is about a Christian band Gaither Vocal Band] I gave it to Buddy Green over the weekend to try and set it to music.

I knew that one day it would be a song. Others tried to compose music for it, but every time I gave someone a text to try to write music for it, I warned that I myself would decide whether there would be a union … Words are my child …

Buddy Greene talked about how he made music:

Mark handed me the lyrics of the song, and they lay with me for two weeks. Then I took them out and read them. It seemed to me that the accompaniment should be written in minor key. I wrote all the music in about thirty minutes. I called Mark at home in Georgia to play and sing a song to him over the phone. He was delighted! He said, “That’s it!”

Two weeks later we met in Mark’s hotel room in Nashville and recorded the song on a small portable tape recorder. Then we gave it to Michael English, who was preparing a new album. He was the first to record Mary, Did You Know?.

Mary Did You Know lyrics by Pentatonix

Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm the storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God

Mary, did you know? x6

The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb!

Mary, did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
That sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am

Mary, did you know? x4
