The history of creation and the meaning of the song One of These Days
Jimmy Young, a BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 DJ, was such an unstoppable talker. The entire Pink Floyd rock band hated him for this and even dedicated the song One of These Days to him.
Although it sounds more like a threat than a dedication, because the lyrics of the song consist of one phrase “One of these days I’m going to cut you into little pieces” (“Someday I will cut you into little pieces”). On the recording, it is spoken by Nick Mason, whose voice was distorted and significantly slowed down.
Release and achievements
One of These Days opens the Meddle album released in 1971. The track impresses with Gilmour and Waters’ bass riffs, the unusual sound that was achieved with the help of the Binson echo machine, Mason’s great playing and, of course, short but capacious lyrics.
Gilmour has repeatedly said that the song One of These Days was the result of the unanimous work of the entire team, and Waters once called it “a caustic assessment of the situation in modern society.”
Interesting Facts
- Gilmour’s bass guitar sounds muffled on the recording due to the old strings. David said that the tech guy they sent out to pick up a new kit went to his girlfriend instead.
- At concerts, Pink Floyd sometimes inserted a collage of Jimmy Young’s crazy phrases into the song, which were not related to each other. It was as if he had been cut into pieces.
- At the fourth minute of One of These Days, an excerpt from the tune from the TV series Doctor Who can be heard.
- An excerpt from One of These Days was performed by the rock band Metallica at a concert in Seoul.
- In the early nineties, a computer virus called Little Pieces was known. He cleared the screen and displayed on it the words of the song One of These Days.
