The famous album A Kind of Magic by the rock band Queen is considered to be the unofficial soundtrack for the feature film Highlander (“Highlander”), because most of the compositions included in it not only sound in the picture, but were also written specifically for it.

It was composed by Roger Taylor after the band members watched an abridged version of “Highlander”. The song’s title appears to be borrowed from a line Duncan Macleod says about his immortality.
Given this, there is no need to talk about the meaning of A Kind of Magic or look for some kind of subtext in it. It’s obvious what the song is about. Moreover, the lyrics of the song are full of other allusions to the film’s plot: “only one will survive”, “no mortal can win on this day” and so on.
Highlander features the original version of A Kind of Magic, also composed by Roger Taylor. But the album included a version of the song in the processing of Freddie Mercury. It differs from the original with a bass guitar part, slightly changed lyrics and structure, as well as a couple of other “tricks”. At the same time, Taylor remained the official author of the composition.
Release and achievements
The new A Kind of Magic was released as a single that climbed to number three on the UK Singles Chart, entered the top 10 of many European charts and peaked at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The single went platinum in Brazil.
