Meaning of Nightcall by Kavinsky & The Story Behind

The work of the French DJ Vincent Belorje, better known under the pseudonym Kavinsky, is dedicated to a single theme. Each composition represents a separate chapter in the history of his alter ego.

We are talking about a fictional character who crashed to death in a Ferrari Testarossa in 1986, and twenty years later resurrected and took up electronic music. The track Nightcall, which made the artist world-famous, is woven into this storyline.

The story of creation and the meaning of the song Nightcall by Kavinsky

But before moving on to the story about the work, let’s listen to the author’s memoirs about the history of creation and the main idea of the song:

My idea was to create an explanation of the story in order to write music for it. I can’t imagine how to create music for no reason, just like that. I can’t play the piano or read sheet music, but I’ve always loved movie soundtracks, so I decided to create a guy in a car who’s already dead so he can die again and then just drive around. Having something to start with, a story, that helped me a lot to make music. I can’t do without it.

According to Kavinsky, he was also inspired by the horror films of the Italian director Dario Argento, the first video games and television series about police officers.

So what is Nightcall about? Judging by the words of the composition, the main character, having already risen from the dead, is trying to contact the girl he is in love with. He invites her to ride with him, is going to talk about his feelings and convinces her not to be afraid of his company.

Release and achievements

The composition was written in 2010 with the participation of musician SebastiAn and producer Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. Kavinsky sang it along with Lovefoxxx, the lead singer of the Brazilian band CSS. On April 2, the composition was released as a single from the Pacific Coast Highway on the B side. Then it hit the charts in France and Belgium.

Success came to Belorja after Nicolas Winding Refn included Nightcall in the soundtrack of the thriller Drive (2011). The director accidentally heard the song on the radio while driving and realized that the track perfectly matched the atmosphere of the film.

In 2013, Kanisky included Nightcall on his debut studio album, OutRun.

Nightcall by Kavinsky Lyrics

I’m giving you a night call to tell you how I feel
I want to drive you through the night, down the hills
I’m gonna tell you something you don’t want to hear
I’m gonna show you where it’s dark, but have no fear

Chorus x2:
There’s something inside you
It’s hard to explain
They’re talking about you boy
But you’re still the same

Nightcall Lyrics Alternative

I call you at night to tell you how I feel
I want to ride with you all night long, down the hills
I’m going to tell you what you don’t want to hear
I’m going to show you the darkness, but there’s no need to be afraid

Chorus x2:
There’s something in you
hard to explain
Boy, they talk about you a lot
But you’re still the same
