Meaning of Song 2 by Blur (Alex James) & The Story Behind

Perhaps not all readers of the Blimey blog are well acquainted with the work of the rock band Blur, but each of you must have heard the song Song 2. It has a killer drum rhythm, an inimitable guitar riff and an exclamation of “woo-hoo” that will forever etch into your memory in the chorus. Let’s talk about her.

The story Behind of creation and meaning

According to Alex James, the story of Song 2 began with an unexpected improvisation.

I remember that day I had a very bad hangover. And the sun was still blazing. We were at Mayfair Studios in Primrose Hill and I was trying to come up with a name for a TV show my friend was making about rock wives. Suddenly it dawned on me: “Hits and Mrs!” And I thought I’d had enough work for today. But actually, it came to Song 2. We didn’t think about it at all.

Graham set up two settings. Dave and Graham started playing the drums at the same time – such a really aggressive rhythm. Well, the chorus is two distorted basses and Damon’s guiding vocals. It was like a return to the past. We have always loved to stupidly give heat, although, perhaps, we are not known for this.

This is how the most famous composition of Blur was born.

It is said that the musicians wrote it as a parody of the “grunge” style, which was very popular at the time. Moreover, they were not even going to initially include Song 2 on the album, considering it too short, but the producers immediately saw the future hit.

Song 2 was the working title of the song. In the process of rehearsals, it took root, and the guys did not want to change it. I must say that the band members later tried to finalize the song, but nothing good came of this venture. According to Alex James, this is how “…the realization that everything does not need to be polished” came.

Release and achievements

The song was included on the Blur album. She showed herself well in the charts of many countries. The song is also included in the lists of the best compositions according to various versions.

Song 2 is actively used in modern culture. It can often be heard in advertisements, television shows, feature films, sports competitions, and so on. Several dozen cover versions were recorded on it.

The music video for Song 2 – Blur was directed by Sophie Muller. He was nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards but did not win either.

Interesting Facts

  • An interesting coincidence (or not a coincidence): “Song 2” is two minutes long; it was released as the second single from the album, in which it sits at number two; on the UK charts, Song 2 reached number two.
  • The US military wanted to use Song 2 to launch the new Stealth bomber, but the Blur group opposed the idea.

Lyrics of Song 2 by Blur (Alex James)

I got my head checked
By a jumbo jet
It wasn’t easy
But nothing is
no

chorus:
When I feel heavy metal
And I’m pins and I’m needles
Well, I lie and I’m easy
All the time but I am never sure
Why I need you
Pleased to meet you

I got my head down
When I was young
It’s not my problem
It’s not my problem

Song 2 Lyrics by Blur Song 2 Alternate

They checked my head
giant airliner
It wasn’t easy
But nothing is easy
Not

Chorus:
When I have heavy metal in my soul
And I’m all on pins and needles
Well, I’m lying and I’m calm
Always, but I’m never sure
Why do I need you
Why am I so glad to see you

I got knocked off the head
When I was young
It’s not my problem
It’s not my problem
