Meaning of One Way or Another – Blondie

Without being familiar with the history of the creation of the track “One Way or Another” (“One Way or Another”) by Blondie, you might think that this is just a playful song from the perspective of a girl who declares that the guy she likes can’t get away from her anywhere. This impression only intensifies when you look at the spectacular blonde Debbie Harry, who performed it. In fact, the text of the composition with a groovy and catchy melody is rather gloomy.

According to Debbie, she wrote the song after she became the object of too much attention from an overly obsessive fan who was either an ex-boyfriend or just a fan:

In fact, I was stalked by a jerk, so she came into the world because of a not so friendly incident in her personal life. I tried to infuse windiness into her to make her more joyful. It was a survival process.

Harry recalled that the idea for the song “One Way or Another” came to her during a rehearsal. Most of the lyrics were written on the same day, with help from Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison.

In 1979, the track was released as a single from Parallel Lines. On the back of the record was the song “Just Go Away”. The single peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 98 in the UK. He achieved his greatest success in Canada, where he climbed to number seven on the RPM Top Singles chart.

Rolling Stone magazine included “One Way or Another” in the famous list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

In 2013, One Direction’s version of the song became a hit in the US and UK. Check out their music video as well.

One way or another I’m going to win you
I’m going to get you get you get you get you
One way or another I’m going to see you
I’m going to meet you meet you meet you meet you
One day, maybe next week
I’m going to meet you, I’m going to meet you, I’ll meet you
I will drive past your house
And if the lights are all down
I’ll see who’s around
I’ll get you, I’ll get you, I’ll get you, I’ll get you
One way or another, I will conquer you
I’ll get you, I’ll get you, I’ll get you, I’ll get you
One way or another, I will see you
I will meet you, meet you, meet you, meet you
One day maybe next week
I will meet you, meet you, meet you, meet you
I will pass by your house
And if the lights go out everywhere
I’ll see if there’s anyone nearby One way or another I’m going to find you
I’m going to get you get you get you get you
One way or another I’m going to win you
I’ll get you, I’ll get you
One way or another I’m going to see you
I’m going to meet you meet you meet you meet you
One day, maybe next week
I’m going to meet you, I’ll meet you
And if the lights are all out
I’ll follow your bus downtown
See who’s hanging out
I’ll get you, I’ll get you, I’ll get you, I’ll get you
One way or another, I will conquer you
I will get you, I will get you
One way or another, I will see you
I will meet you, meet you, meet you, meet you
One day maybe next week
I will meet you, meet you
And if the lights go out everywhere
I will follow your bus to the center
Let’s see who you hang out with One way or another I’m going to lose you
I’m going to give you the slip, a slip of the lip or another
I’m going to lose you, I’m going to trick you, I’ll trick you
One way or another I’m going to lose you
I’m going to trick you trick you trick you trick you
One way or another I’m going to lose you
I’m going to give you the slip
I’ll sneak away from you no matter what you say
I will lose you, I will fool you, I will fool you
One way or another, I will lose you
I will blow you, I will blow you, I will blow you, I will blow you
One way or another, I will lose you
I’ll slip away from you I’ll walk down the mall
Stand over by the wall
Where I can see it all
Find out who you call
Lead you to the supermarket checkout
some specials and rat food,
Get lost in the crowd
I’ll stop at the wall
Where everything will be seen
Find out who you’re calling
I’ll follow you to the supermarket checkout
Some discounted goods and crappy food
I melted into the crowd

Song quote

“One Way or Another” was an ode to manic lust, in which Harry mixed the Ronettes-esque girl band sound with the Ramones-esque punk attack.
