Meaning of One More Time – Daft Punk

In February 2001, French electronic duo Daft Punk released their second studio album Discovery. Its release was preceded by the release of the single “One More Time”. The song, recorded with the participation of Romanthony, became the group’s most successful hit. The dance composition was registered in nightclubs for many years, becoming an obligatory attribute of parties.

One More Time song history

Composed by Thomas Bangalter, Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo and Anthony Moore, better known as Romanthony.

“One More Time” features a sample from “More Spell on You” by Eddie Johns. Bangalter initially denied the borrowing, but Daft Punk members later officially confirmed it. Since then, Jones has been listed as a co-writer of the track.

The vocals on “One More Time” were performed by Romanthony. Homem-Christo explained why they decided to invite an American DJ:

…we thought that the funkyness of his voice suited the funkyness of the music.

Track recording

When processing the composition, Daft Punk musicians used musical filters and automatic vocal correction, for which they were criticized by connoisseurs of natural sound. Thomas Bangalter responded to critics:

Many people are unhappy with the fact that musicians use Auto Tune. It reminds me of the late seventies, when musicians in France tried to ban the synthesizer… They didn’t understand that they could use these devices in new ways, and not just replace the instruments that had come before.

Now we don’t care as much as before about what critics say about our music. We liked this track, Romanthony liked it. We may be disappointed by what people say about the song, but we still liked it. It’s just music… Criticizing the vocoder is like asking sixties bands, “Why do you use electric guitars?” It’s just a tool… nothing more.

DJ Times, 2001

According to Thomas, Romanthony was pleased with the sound of his vocals on the track:

He tried a lot of different things and was always trying to innovate, which is something we enjoyed doing on our records. Before that, he had never treated his voice as an instrument.

Oh yeah all right don’t stop the dancing
One more time we’re gonna celebrate
Oh yeah all right don’t stop the dancing
Once again we will celebrate
Oh yeah it’s alright don’t stop dancing
Once again we will celebrate
Oh yeah it’s alright don’t stop dancing One more time I’m just feelin’
celebration
Tonight
Celebrate
Don’t wait too late
We don’t stop
You can’t stop
We’re gonna celebrate
There will be a holiday
Tonight
Celebrate
Don’t wait until it’s too late
We don’t stop
You can’t stop
We’ll celebrate One more time
One more time
One more time a celebration
You know we’re gonna do it right
Tonight, just feeling
Music’s got me feeling the need
We’re gonna celebrate
One more time
Celebrate and dance so free
Music’s got me feeling so free
Celebrate and dance so free
One more time
You know we’ll make it right
Today, there is a feeling
Music made me need
We will celebrate
Again
Free to celebrate and dance
Music gives me a feeling of freedom
Free to celebrate and dance
Music’s got me feeling so free
We’re gonna celebrate
Celebrate and dance so free
One more time Music makes me feel free
We will celebrate
Free to celebrate and dance
Again
