In 1997, the American band Blondie reunited after a fifteen-year break. First, the musicians recorded a cover version of the song Ordinary Summer for the tribute collection We Will Fall, dedicated to the work of Iggy Pop. Then they took up the album No Exit.
Blondie released the song Maria as the first single in her new history. The comeback turned out to be more than convincing, because the track conquered the tops of several charts.

When asked what the song “Maria” is about, the author replied:
About desire. About teenage desire, because I have a teenage daughter, she is very beautiful. I see these boys staring at her. I put myself in their place, thinking about how I usually behaved with girls in those days. I wasn’t a cheeky guy at all. I watched more from afar and then went home and wrote a poem for her. I was a really sad little asshole. It sounds nice, but you won’t get attention that way.
So Maria is about desire, and the basic idea of using Ave Maria motifs is to say, “She’s on a pedestal, she’s almost a saint.” But it’s not a religious thing at all, I don’t believe in religion.

Release and achievements
The release of the single Maria took place on February 1, 1999. It was released as a two-disc CD set. The first included remixes of the track “Maria”, and the second – live versions of the song Screaming Skin and the composition In the Flesh.
The song topped the charts in the UK, Spain, Greece and Scotland. It also reached the top ten of the charts in several other countries.

Interesting Facts
- The phrase “like a millionaire/walking on imported air” was previously included in the songs Walk Like Me by Blondie.
