Meaning of the song Joyride by Roxette

The composition Joyride was the last hit of the Swedish band Roxette, with which she managed to climb to first place in the US chart.

It was created under the influence of The Beatles, although it is by no means easy to remember at least one Beatle song that it would resemble.

The history of creation and the meaning of the song Joyride

Let’s start with the fact that Per Gessle borrowed the name Joyride from an interview with Sir Paul McCartney, in which he described with this word their experience of writing together with John Lennon. For those who do not know English: it means a pleasure trip in a car (often without the knowledge of the owner of the car).

Per Gessle also said some interesting things about working on the song Joyride:

Well, yes, it has a bit of the Beatles in it. In fact, my girlfriend left a note on the piano with the words in Swedish: “Hi, you fool. I love you” (“Hej din tok, jag alskar dig”). I was just in the process of writing this song. I thought it was a cool expression, so I included its chorus. You know, it’s very similar to how I write songs. I just take excerpts from a conversation with a taxi driver, something from television and so on. And I use it, create something out of it.

Joyride is one of those songs that you recognize as really big hits while you’re writing them. Because it had all the ingredients that make it special. Also, when we recorded it, we were on top of the world, and it seemed to us that everyone would listen to this song …

Release and achievements

Joyride was released as the first single from the band’s self-titled album Roxette (1991). It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a week, climbed to number four on the UK Singles Chart and climbed to the top of the charts in several other countries.

Interesting Facts

  • It is believed that the words “Come on, join the joyride everybody, get your tickets here, step right this way” at the beginning of Joyride are a reference to the song Magical Mystery Tour, in which McCartney says a similar phrase.
  • In the Stanley Cup in 1994, the Vancouver Canucks took to the ice to the song Joyride.

Joyride Lyrics

I hit the road out of nowhere
I had to jump in my car and be a rider
In a love game following the stars,
Don’t need no book of wisdom,
I get no money talk at all

She has a train going downtown,
She’s got a club on the moon
And she’s telling all the secrets
In a wonderful balloon

Oh she’s the heart of the funfair,
She’s got me whistling her private tune
And it all begins where it ends,
And she’s all mine, my magic friend

She says: hello, you fool, I love you,
C’mon join the joyride, join the joyride

She’s a flower, I can paint her
She’s a child of the sun
We’re a part of this together
could never turn around and run

Don’t need no fortune teller
To know where my lucky love belongs oh no
Cos it all begins again, when it ends
And we’re all magic friends

She says: hello, you fool, I love you,
C’mon join the joyride, join the joyride

Hello, you fool, I love you,
C’mon join the joyride, be a joyrider

I take you on a skyride
Feeling like your spellbound
The sunshine is a lady
Who rox you like a baby

Joyride Lyrics

I hit the road out of nowhere
I had to jump in the car and become a rider
When in the game of love I follow the stars
I don’t need the Book of Wisdom
And money means nothing to me

Her train is heading downtown
She has a club on the moon
And she gives away all the secrets
In an amazing cloud with text

Oh, she’s the soul of the fun fair
She makes me whistle her secret tune
And it all starts where it ends
And she belongs entirely to me, my magical friend

She says, “Hi, you fool, I love you.
Come on, come with me, come with me”

She is a flower, I can draw her
She is a child of the sun
We are part of it
Never could turn around and run

I don’t need a fortune teller
To know where my happy love is, oh no
‘Cause it all starts again when it ends
And we’re all magical friends

She says, “Hi, you fool, I love you.
Come on, come with me, come with me”

“Hi, you fool, I love you.
Come on, ride with me, be a fun rider”

I will ride you through the sky with the breeze,
like enchanted
Sunshine is a lady
that lulls you like a child

Song quote

As for their last number one, which came out in 1991, it always reminded me of the Beatles, it has a kind of Beatles vibe to it.
