The songwriters are Roger Taylor and Brian May.
Brian tells about the history of the composition Thank God It’s Christmas:
Sometime in July of that year, Roger and I both came up with the idea of a Christmas single. We went to work and recorded both demos and then decided that Roger’s version was better. Another song, mine, became Anita’s Christmas song [Anita Dobson] a couple of years later – “I Dream of Christmas”.

The studio version of the composition was ready in the summer of 1984. All members of the band, except Freddie, recorded their parts in London, and Mercury’s vocals were recorded in Munich, where he worked on his solo record Mr. bad guy.
Brian May later recalled:
Well, it’s funny that you have to do Christmas tracks in the summer and you’re not in the right mood at all. Because if you start making them at Christmas, it will obviously be over before you release them.

Release and achievements
The Thank God It’s Christmas single was released on November 26, 1984. He reached the twenty-first line of the British charts. Subsequently, the song hit the Christmas charts in some countries several times, but did not rise high in the charts.
The track is not included on Queen’s studio albums. The song was released on the back of the A Winter’s Tale single from Made in Heaven (1995). In 1999, it was included in the Greatest Hits III compilation. The composition is also presented as a bonus on the deluxe edition of The Works (2011).
