Meaning of Summer Moved On by A-ha & The Story Behind

After releasing the record Memorial Beach in 1993, which became A-ha’s fifth studio work, the band members decided to part ways. Magne Furuholmen recalled: “That album felt like a requiem, and it was clear that we wanted to get out of the pop business.”

However, some time passed, and the musicians had a chance to gather on stage again. The story of their continued success is directly related to the song Summer Moved On.

The story of the song “Summer Moved On” by A-ha

In 1998, the group was invited to perform at a concert dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. The idea arose from the organizers of the event, and none of the former colleagues – at least, as they themselves later claimed – did not take the first step towards. In general, the guys agreed to perform a couple of tracks, and Paul Wauctor-Savoy even composed a new song for such a significant event.

As you may have guessed, we are talking about the composition Summer Moved On. Having hastily rehearsed it, the musicians brilliantly played the new song, as well as the time-tested hit The Sun Always Shines on TV. The audience rewarded them with such a storm of applause that the band members decided to try to reunite and continue their joint creative work.

In 2000 they presented the new album Minor Earth Major Sky. Its official release was preceded by the release of the single Summer Moved On with Barely Hanging On on the back. The song was a resounding success in European countries, and the single sold over two and a half million copies.

Everyone is free to interpret the meaning of the lyrics in their own way. The author’s explanation could not be found, but it can be assumed that the past summer symbolizes the ended relationship or the transience of life in general. However, this is just the case when you don’t want to get to the bottom of the matter at all …

Summer Moved On Lyrics by A-ha

Summer moved on and the way it goes you can’t tag along
Honey moved out and the way it went leaves no doubt
Moments will pass in the morning light I found out
Seasons can’t last and there’s just one thing left to ask
Stay, don’t just walk away and leave me another
Day, a day just like today with nobody else around

Friendships move on until the day you can’t get along
Handshakes unfold and the way it goes no one knows
Moments will pass in the morning light I found out
Seasons can’t last and there’s just one thing left to ask
Stay, don’t just walk away and leave me another
Day, a day just like today
Stay, don’t just walk away with nobody else around

Reasons can’t last and there’s just one thing left to ask
Stay, don’t just walk away and leave me another
Day, a day just like today
Stay, don’t just walk away with nobody else around
summer moved on

Lyrics Summer Moved On by A-ha Alternate

Summer is gone and you can’t follow it
The sweetness is gone and there’s no doubt left
That the moments will fade in the morning light and I realized
That there is nothing eternal, and I only have to ask:
Stay, don’t just leave, leave me one more
A day, a day like today when there’s no one around

Friendship continues until one day they can’t get along anymore
Handshakes are over and no one knows why
Moments will fade in the morning light and I realized
That there is nothing eternal, and I only have to ask:
Stay, don’t just leave, leave me one more
A day, a day like today
Stay, don’t just leave when no one is around

Nothing lasts forever, and all I have to do is ask:
Stay, don’t just leave, leave me one more
A day, a day like today
Stay, don’t just leave when no one is around
Summer has passed…
