Meaning of Hymn for the Weekend by Coldplay & Song Story

At the end of January 2016, the rock band Coldplay made a splash among fans by presenting on YouTube a video for the song Hymn for the Weekend, which Chris Martin performed with Beyoncé. Over the next couple of months, the video featuring Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor was viewed by over one hundred and fifty million people. But we will return to the clip later, but first, briefly about the history of the track’s creation.

The story of creation and the meaning of the song Hymn for the Weekend

The idea to write the composition in a style somewhat uncharacteristic of Coldplay belonged to Chris Martin. The band’s frontman recalled:

It all started with me listening to Flo Rida or something and thinking what a shame Coldplay never had a nightclub song like “Turn Down For What” [трек в исполнении DJ Snake и Lil Jon]. What would it be called if we had one? I thought I wanted to call the song “Drinks on Me” where you sit on the side of the club and buy everyone drinks because you’re so damn cool. I laughed about it, and then the melody appeared: “Drinks on me, drinks on me”, and then the rest of the song appeared …

I introduced it to the rest of the band and they said, “We really like the song, but you can’t sing ‘drinks on me’.” And it turned into a “drink from me” and a fantasy of having an angelic personality in your life. And later the idea arose to invite Beyonce to sing.

So the song about a generous guy who is relaxing in a club on a grand scale became a lyrical composition about love, saving in trouble and raising to heaven.

Release and achievements

Coldplay premiered the song on November 30, 2015 during The Annie Mac Show on BBC Radio 1.

In January 2016, “Hymn for the Weekend” was released as the second single from A Head Full of Dreams. It peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart.

Video Hymn for the Weekend

The music video for the song was filmed in October 2015 in several Indian cities. Director Ben Mor (Ben Mor) withstood the video in the style of the Holi festival of colors. In addition to the members of the group and Beyoncé, super popular Indian actress Sonam Kapoor took part in the filming.

Now let’s watch the video.

Hymn for the Weekend Lyrics by Coldplay

Oh, angel sent from up above
You know you make my world light up
When I was down, when I was hurt
You came to lift me up
Life is a drink, and love’s a drug
Oh now I think I must be miles up
When I was a dried river up
You came to rain a flood

You said drink from me, drink from me
When I was so thirsty
Poured on a symphony
Now I just can’t get enough
Put your wings on me, on me
When I was so heavy
Poured on a symphony
When I’m low, low, low, low

Got me feeling drunk and high
So high, so high
I’m feeling drunk and high
So high, so high

Oh, angels sent from up above
I feel you cursing through my blood
Life is a drink and your love’s about
To make the stars come out

Put your wings on me, wings on me
When I was so heavy
Poured on a symphony
When I’m low, low, low, low

You got me feeling drunk and high
So high, so high
Now I’m feeling drunk and high
So high, so high

Now I’m feeling drunk and high
So high, so high
That I shoot across the sky
That I shoot across the sky
That I shoot across the sky
Watch me shoot across the sky

Hymn for the Weekend Lyrics Alternative

Oh angel sent from above
You know you fill my world with light
When I was in trouble and suffered
You came to inspire me
Life is a drink, love is a drug
Now I feel like I should soar in the sky
When I was a running river
You came to fill me with rain

You said drink from me, drink from me
When I was thirsty
Shed a symphony
Now I want even more
Gave me wings
When I was having a hard time
You poured out a symphony
When I felt bad, bad, bad, bad

I’m drunk on you and like I’m stoned
Really stoned
I’m drunk and high
Be high

Oh angel sent from above
I feel you coursing through my veins
Life is a drink and your love is about
How to make stars appear in the sky

You gave me wings, gave me wings
When I was having a hard time
Spilled a symphony
When I felt bad, bad, bad, bad

I’m drunk on you and like I’m stoned
Really stoned
Now I’m drunk and high
Be high

Now I’m drunk and high
So high
that I’m flying in the sky
that I’m flying in the sky
that I’m flying in the sky
Watch me fly through the sky
