Meaning of Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish (full name – Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell) is a contemporary American singer and songwriter. Now only 18 years old, she is already world famous and is considered the first pop singer of this magnitude in this millennium.

The popularity came after the release of the song “Ocean Eyes”, which was recorded in October 2015 and eventually collected almost 200 million views on Spotify. Now one of the main hits is the single “Bad Guy”, which came out on top of the American charts.

In November 2019, Billie Eilish released a new song – Everything I Wanted (Everything I wanted).

It turned out to be lyrical and a little melancholic, as the singer says in her interviews, she recorded this single after a night’s sleep and dedicated it to her brother – Finneas O’Connell – with whom she has a very good relationship.

In the first verse of the song, there is, as it were, a description of her real dream, in which she jumps from a bridge, and her close people and those with whom she works, whom she knows absolutely do not react at all, and the girl gets the feeling that they do not care about her no one will notice the disappearance. Such dreams usually mean deep feelings about relationships with people, especially close ones, and, in principle, emotional stress.

Then comes the chorus, which mentions the brother, or rather his quote, an appeal to Billy herself. He says that no one will offend her as long as he is nearby and further sings:

“If I could change the way you see yourself,
You wouldn’t wonder why you’re here,
they don’t deserve you.”

I think that these words are connected with the singer’s feelings about herself, it is known that she suffered from depression and, against the background of dislike for herself, even released the single “Idontwannabeyouanymore” – I don’t want to be you anymore, dedicated to my reflection in the mirror. But despite the self-criticism of Billy herself, her brother is always with her and tries to support and help in everything. That is why, against the background of the gloomy dreams described in the verses, the chorus looks brighter and filled with love and support from a loved one.

The description of the dream continues in the next couplet. She wants to scream, but her head is already under water and she thinks they call her a weakling. But this verse ends with the words:

“Because today everyone wants to know something from me
And I don’t want to disappoint them”

It is possible that this is a reference to the experiences of the girl and shows the reverse side of fame and popularity. After all, the higher you climb, the more they expect from you and the more closely they follow the successes and misses. And sometimes, from fatigue, constant work and attempts to keep the bar, one simply gives up and wants to scream (which is what we are talking about at the beginning of the verse).

The song is called – Everything that I wanted and, judging by the content, it is sung not just about the dream that Billy saw, but also about what happens on the other side of the fulfillment of all desires.

Which, in fact, is confirmed by the words coming after the chorus:

“If I knew all this then, would I do it again?”

I think that here we are talking about her career and worldwide popularity.

And the song ends with the words:

“If they knew that everything they say gets into my head, what would they say instead?”

It is difficult to say exactly who these lines are dedicated to, but they are probably connected with the main part of the song – a dream about suicide.

This song can be interpreted in different ways, depending on the personal experiences of each person, but if you look, the meaning is much deeper than it might seem at first glance.
