Meaning of Cold as Ice by Foreigner & The Story Behind

The debut album of the American band Foreigner – traditionally named after the group – gave fans of rock music several killer hits. Among them is the composition Cold as Ice, which became the decoration of the five times platinum record Foreigner and to this day remains one of the most famous and popular tracks of the cult band.

The story behind and meaning of the song Cold as Ice by Foreigner

The work on Cold as Ice was the first experience of joint creative activity for Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. Obviously, this is a song about a woman who broke off a relationship without sparing the feelings of a man who continues to love her.

In an interview with SongFacts.com, Mick explained what inspired them to write the song:

Cold as Ice was written after watching the movie “Mommy Dearest” [Mommy Dearest] with Joan Crawford, and – oddly enough – he became a source of inspiration. On a subconscious level, you copy what happened in your past: what comes from close relationships, pain and suffering because of love that was so strong and deep, and then you suddenly lose it.

From the whole gamut of emotional feelings that you experience during a relationship. Sometimes they end, and sometimes they last, and when it comes to the final break, you are left with only memories of that relationship. It happened to me too. It’s like you’re digging deep into your treasure trove of important things that you remember from those times when you were on the brink of tragedy.

Cold as Ice Lyrics by Foreigner

You’re as cold as ice
You’re willing to sacrifice our love
You never take advice
Someday you’ll pay the price, I know

chorus:
I’ve seen it before
It happens all the time
Closing the door
You leave the world behind
You’re digging for gold
Yet throwing away
A fortune in feelings
But someday you’ll pay

You’re as cold as ice
You’re willing to sacrifice our love
you want paradise
But someday you’ll pay the price, I know

Lyrics of Cold as Ice by Foreigner Alternate

You are cold as ice
You want to sacrifice our love
You never listen to advice
I know one day you will pay

Chorus:
I’ve seen it before
It happens all the time
Closing the door
You burn all your bridges
You are looking for gold
While throwing out
A whole state of feeling
But one day you will pay

You are cold as ice
You want to sacrifice our love
You want heaven
But I know one day you will pay
