Meaning of Love Hurt & The Story Behind

Thanks to the creative duo of songwriters Budlo and Felice Bryant, many good compositions were born, but the most famous of them is the famous Love Hurts.

For more than half a century of the song’s history, it has become a hit several times thanks to the efforts of musicians and groups performing in different styles.

The story of creation and the meaning of the song Love Hurts

The first version of Love Hurts was recorded by the Everly Brothers in the summer of 1960.

It was not released as a single and generally did not impress the public.

Roy Orbison sang it a few months later. His version was much more successful. He was the first to make Love Hurts an international hit.

His version was especially popular in Australia, where it hit the top five singles of the local chart. Some music lovers still believe that Orbison is the author and first performer of the song.

In later years, Love Hurts was sung by Emmylou Harris and Graham Parsons. Harris re-recorded it twice and still includes it in concert programs.

Three interesting versions of the song appeared at once in 1975. Of particular note is the recording of the song, which was made in the spirit of a rock ballad by Nazareth. Without a doubt, this is the most famous version of Love Hurts, eclipsing all previous ones (may the Roy Orbison fans forgive me) and becoming a model for many subsequent ones.

In the same year, Cher sang Love Hurts, and in the UK, the most successful was the disco version of the song, which was introduced by Jim Capaldi. In the early nineties, Cher pleased her fans with another cover of Love Hurts, which was included in the album of the same name. Also worth noting is Love Hurts performed by Joan Jett.

A complete list of well-known cover versions of Love Hurts can be found on the English-language Wikipedia. There are several dozen of them.

The song is often used in movies and commercials. As a rule, the version of the Nazareth group is used.

Interesting Facts

  • The Nazareth band corrected the original lyrics a bit. In the second verse, they changed the word stove (“furnace”) to flame (“flame”).

Lyrics of Love Hurts

love hurts,
love scars,
love wounds
And mars, any heart
Not tough or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts…
Ooh, ooh love hurts

You are young, I know, but even so
I know a thing or two
I’ve learned from you
I really learned a lot, I really learned a lot
Love is like a flame
It burns you when it’s hot
Love hurts…
Ooh, ooh love hurts

Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves I guess
They’re not foolin’ me

I know it isn’t true, I know it isn’t true
Love is just a lie
Made to make you blue
Love hurts…
Ooh, ooh love hurts
Ooh, ooh love hurts

Love Hurts Lyrics Alternate

Love hurts
Love leaves scars
Love hurts
And destroys every heart
Not strong enough or strong enough
To bear a lot of pain, to bear a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
She’s full of rain
Love hurts…
Oh-oh-oh, love hurts

You’re young, I know, but still
I know something
learned from you
Really I’ve learned a lot, I’ve learned a lot
Love is like a flame
She burns you when she’s hot
Love hurts…
Oh-oh-oh, love hurts

Some fools think about happiness
Bliss, intimacy
I believe that some fools deceive themselves
But they can’t fool me

I know it’s not true, I know it’s not true
Love is just a lie
Designed to make you sad
Love hurts…
Oh-oh-oh, love hurts
Oh-oh-oh, love hurts
