History of creation
Work on the novel was extremely exhausting for the Polish writer. The first episodes were written only in 1895.

Senkevich wrote zealously, passionately, and for 11 months he simply did not think about anything else. He often complained of headaches, extreme fatigue and exhaustion.
However, it seems to him that the hardships were, in part, a joy, because in his own words, he collected so many beautiful and terrible scenes in his head that their implementation could become the most important reality that was written earlier.
Well, now briefly about the plot.
Brief story
The novel describes the events that take place on the territory of Ancient Rome. These were the times of the cruel and evil emperor Nero. Under his rule, Rome was mired in debauchery and increased crime.

In the center of the plot, Mark Vinicius is a patrician and a Roman soldier who arrived from the front to his homeland to rest. Visiting Plautius Avl, he sees the beautiful girl Callina. She was the daughter of the leader of the Lygians, who was taken prisoner by the Roman legionnaires. She was taken in by the family of the patrician Aulus. The tender and virginal Lygia Callina conquered the heart of a warrior.
Mark trusted Petronius, close to the emperor Nero, and seeks his advice regarding his marriage to Callina. An influential politician decided to act behind Vinicius’s back in order to make his task easier. He wanted Lygia to be brought to the palace, and he would hand her over to Vinicius after her. However, the plan was only half successful, as the faithful slave of Mrs. Urs was beaten off from the guard, and they hid among the Christian class in a remote area of the capital.

Mark, learning about what had happened, fell into a rage. Anger from unfulfilled hopes clouded his eyes, and he wanted to make her his slave. The warrior starts searching for the girl.
It is noteworthy that Lygia herself breathes unevenly towards the stern warrior. However, he diligently hides his location, fearing for his future.
How it all ended
The novel ends on a happy note, as the young people still get married. This was preceded by the destruction of the Christian quarters in Rome, a fire that engulfed the poorest areas of the capital.

Lygia had to endure a fever in prison in order to eventually return to the man she fell in love with.
But Mark’s assistant, who throughout the whole work played a double game, and was, frankly, a vile person, nevertheless ended badly. Long before his order from the emperor to eliminate him, he realized that he would not live. Therefore, ahead of time, he opened his veins, and thus deprived the emperor Nero of the pleasure of contemplating his death.
