Meaning of Hope of Deliverance by Paul McCartney & The Story

Over decades of incredibly fruitful creative activity, Paul McCartney has written dozens of life-affirming songs. The composition Hope of Deliverance also charges with optimism and encourages even in the most difficult times to hope for a happy future.

The Story Behind of Hope of Deliverance by Paul McCartney

The author of the words and music of the work is Paul McCartney. The exact date of birth of the composition is unknown. It is believed that she was born between 1989 and 1993.

McCartney spoke about the history and meaning of the song Hope of Deliverance:

I went up to the attic in our house, just to hide from everyone. A hatch leads there. You go up a little staircase and then you close and no one can get in, so you know, you can dedicate a couple of hours to yourself. So, I went to the attic and took a twelve-string guitar with me. To have some fun, I put a capo on it. This is a small bar that is installed on the strings and changes the length of the neck. On twelve strings, it evokes a very ringing sound that reminds me of cathedrals and Christmas.

The unusual sound of the guitar prompted Paul to think about the pressing problems of mankind:

This took me into the realm of hope, deliverance, and then I mentioned the darkness that surrounds us. You know, if you’re involved in liberating people in Somalia, then that’s liberation – you want to get out of there safely. If you are very poor, then the opportunity to get out of this trap becomes your deliverance. Homeless people, diseases and other more or less important problems – all this surrounds us.

Then the first sketches of the composition appeared in the attic.

Meaning of Hope of Deliverance

Paul McCartney explained what Hope of Deliverance is about:

So it became a kind of optimistic song, addressed either to a girl, or to a divine person. I really like to leave everything ambiguous. I used to do that a lot in my songs, so people tell me, “I always thought she meant something else…”

Hope of Deliverance record

The song was recorded during the studio work on the Off the Record album. Julian Mendelsohn is the producer.

British musician Paul Wix Wichens shared his memories:

Hope of Deliverance was the track that Paul [Маккартни] and Robbie [гитарист Робби Макинтош (Robbit McIntosh)] put in order together. They worked on it with acoustic guitars. When the rest of us came to listen to it, it was a real guitar wall.

The New World Tour, Paul McCartney

Drummer Blair Cunningham said:

Hope of Dilverance was a ‘let’s try this, let’s try that’ track until that sunny day when I said, ‘It sounds Caribbean, like a calypso on the beach.’ Paul also heard it, so it happened. It uses a drum machine, but other than that, I play acoustic drums, not machines. It’s okay on a record, but how will it play out live?

The New World Tour, Paul McCartney

Three Latin American musicians took part in the recording. One of them was Maurizio Ravalico. He recalled:

We were invited to McCartney’s private studio in Sussex. We were given a listen to a track that had already been completed and mixed. We were also given some general instructions. We only realized that they wanted to give the song a Latin American zest, and we brought a whole van of instruments to the studio!

We were in the studio for half a day. Everything went smoothly and quickly, but without pressure. McCartney and Mendelssohn listened to our suggestions and didn’t give any guidance on our instruments or playing style.

Release and achievements

In the UK, the song became a hit, rising to number eighteen on the singles chart. In the US Billboard Hot 100, her successes were much more modest. She stopped at 83rd position. It did, however, peak at number nine on the Billboard Adult Contemporary, number five in Canada, and number three in Germany.

On January 15, 1993, the Hope of Deliverance remixes were released. They are very fond of DJs and visitors to nightclubs.

McCartney performed Hope of Deliverance in concert on The New World Tour in 1993. In 2012, Paul McCartney sang Hope of Deliverance for the first time in years at a concert in Bogotá, Colombia during the On the Run Tour.

Hope Of Deliverance Lyrics by Paul McCartney

I will always be hoping, hoping.
You will always be holding, holding
My heart in your hand
I will understand
I will understand someday, one day.
You will understand always, always
From now to then.

chorus:
When it will be right, I don’t know.
What it will be like, I don’t know.
We live in hope of deliverance
From the darkness that surrounds us.
Hope of deliverance, hope of deliverance.
Hope of deliverance from the darkness
That surrounds us.

And I wouldn’t mind knowing, knowing
That you wouldn’t mind going
Going along with my plan.

Chorus

Hope of deliverance, hope of deliverance.
Hope of deliverance from the darkness
That surrounds us.

hope of delivery.
hope of delivery.
I will understand.

Song quote

I noticed that many of the songs that come up are my statements in the spirit of: “Do not give in to despair or depression.” You know, like, “Don’t give up! We’ll do it!”
