Jimi Hendrix has said that Foxy Lady is his only joyful song, as usually the creative process was not very happy for him. We will not dispute this statement – the author is better off knowing which of his creations should be considered fun. The history of creation and the meaning of the song Foxy Lady
The main idea of the song is obvious. The expression “foxy lady” has long been used in American slang to refer to a sexy woman. The author refers to such a beauty, and the unambiguity of his desires is visible both in expressions and in the manner of execution.
Interestingly, outside of the stage, Hendrix was very modest and, according to him, never addressed the girls in a similar manner.
Whether this “sexy lady” had a real prototype is hard to say. Katie Etchenham, Jimi’s girlfriend, and Heather Taylor, who later became the wife of Roger Daltrey from the rock band The Who, and other girls who had a direct or indirect relationship to Hendrix, also claimed the role of a source of inspiration.
There is also an opinion that in Foxy Lady Jimi did not mean a woman, but drugs, but this version is not supported by any evidence and does not seem convincing.
The song’s melody is known for its bright, repetitive guitar riff and the distinctive E7#9 (aka “Hendrix” chord) on which it is based.
Recording and release
Foxy Lady was recorded at CBS Studios on December 13, 1966. The first public performance of the song took place in January 1967. It became the first track on the Are You Experienced album and was released as a single in the US (#67 on the chart), Japan, France and Germany.
Since Hendrix’s death, Foxy Lady has been featured on all of his greatest hits compilations. It was included in the list of the 500 greatest songs, compiled by readers of Rolling Stone.
