Meaning of the song I Feel Love by Donna Summer

American singer Donna Summer was by no means sure of the success of the song I Feel Love. But Brian Eno, hearing the composition for the first time, called it the future of club music. The intuition failed the famous singer, but the legendary producer did not change her professional instinct. The composition revolutionized disco and set the direction of the genre.

The history of creation and the meaning of the song I Feel Love

The co-writers were Donna Summer, producer Giorgio Moroder and recording director Pete Bellotte. Pete, who has also collaborated with Elton John, Cliff Richard, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner and other pop stars, spoke about the history of the song:

It was the last track on the concept album I Remember Yesterday, where Donna sang the first track in a 1940s style, moving through different genres until the final song, which was meant to represent the future. We used a Moog synthesizer to give the song a futuristic feel and came up with a new way to layer sound levels on top of each other, perfectly syncing them into the track. We had no idea it would sound so special… Donna was one of those phenomenal one-take artists. She could just walk in, sing a song and leave. She has always been accurate.

In the same vein, Giorgio Moroder spoke about the track:

We wanted to end with a futuristic song, and I decided that it should be recorded with a synthesizer.

Donna recalled that the demo version of the song did not make the right impression on her:

Giorgio brought me a tape of this popcorn track and I said, “What the hell is this, Giorgio?”

Pete Bellotte agreed with the singer:

We never considered it an outstanding track. We just saw it as part of a good album.

Release and achievements

However, the listeners were of a different opinion. The single I Feel Love, released in early July 1977, climbed to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained at the top of the British charts for four weeks. The song also topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and France.

David Bowie recalled how much the composition made a strong impression on Brian Eno:

One day in Berlin… Eno ran in and said, “I heard the sound of the future”… he put on Donna Summer’s I Feel Love… and said, “That’s it, no more searching. This single will change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years.” Which is exactly what it was.
