The meaning of the film “Draw” directed by Lena Lanskikh

An idea of ​​what idea the creators are promoting in a feature film is given by its two attributes – the title and the advertising slogan. In the case of the Draw project by Lena Lansky, this is the working title Milk Girl and the slogan: I am 14, I have a child. A hint of social drama, the sensitive problem of early motherhood, and a demonstration of the controversial Russian mentality prompted the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation to support the work of producers Sergei Selyanov and Natalia Drozd. For three months of filming, which took place in St. Petersburg, by the beginning of 2021, the low-budget author’s film “Draw” was made up – a sketch from the life of the outcasts of the Trans-Ural hinterland.

People with a careful attitude to their mental health should not watch the film, it carries negativity and drives them into depression. The authors exaggerately describe the problems of the Russian provincial world, state the presence of moral degradation and the existential crisis of the characters. At the same time, impotence in trying to change anything is emphasized, life without a hint of “a ray of light in a dark kingdom.”

Nichya is a social arthouse, typical of a special generation of Russian directors – the “new quiet ones”. Those who, for the sake of festival awards, “lower Russia into the trash.” The genre is one hundred percent “darkness”, which tests the emotional skeleton of the viewer for strength. The prefix “hyper” here accompanies all subsequent epithets: the gloom of locations, the wretchedness of life, poverty and the decline of society, the vulgarity and inferiority of characters, the hopelessness of difficult life situations.

The picture is a set of leaden-viscous dialogues, fragmentary and cynical “everyday life”, scenes in a gray provincial landscape or in a gloomy forest. The numbness at the sight of the nudity of a youngster does not cover only those who are aware that a 20-year-old actress is playing a teenager. A child has given birth to a child and is completely at a loss because of this – this is how briefly the essence of the plotless film “Draw” can be described.

The central character is a high school student Vika, who definitely did not want to become a young mother. At the age of 14, she entered adulthood in an unusual way: along with her passport, she received another document – a child’s birth certificate. Vika does not go to school because she has to change diapers, express milk and take care of the baby on her own. And in the next room, her half-brother and the second parent of the baby plays a video console and pretends not to be aware of what is happening. But those around either do not know, or do not want to know that the child was born as a result of the violent actions of a guy over a minor relative. Among them are the detached mother Marina, and the indifferent father-policeman, and slandering neighbors, and mocking peers, and teachers who are afraid of a “bad example”.

The key theme of the story is that Vika cannot cry and accept the situation. She keeps her motherhood a secret, because she is ashamed – they will condemn, stigmatize, slander. The girl is haunted by a misunderstanding of others and a sense of guilt. The main character gets bogged down in a deep nightmare of teenage loneliness.

It is difficult to “pull the strap” of early motherhood: to show parental sacrifice and at the same time remain a child with your own interests. The rhythm of life has changed, but the old hobbies remain: Vika is engaged in a dance club, “lights up” at a disco, indulges in a “dog buzz” in a teenage company, walks with the local handsome Andrey and is ready to “rush” from the town with him. However, briefly and bitingly, like a status to an account on a social network, the stop phrase sounds: “I’m 14, I have a child.”

Vika’s sudden mood swings and irrationality of Vika’s behavior are annoying throughout the entire timeline. So you expect that a sloppy young mother, left alone with her misfortune, will do the irreparable. The scenes where she sells the baby to gypsies, leaves it in the forest, and then does not return for it, but steals someone else’s, seem real. Only in the finale it becomes clear that maternal feelings have become a “guiding star” for the heroine, she will not harm herself and the baby. Because in this world no one needs it, except for your child.
