The meaning of the film Bury me behind the plinth

“Bury me behind the plinth” is a domestic film shot in 2009 based on the autobiographical book of the same name by Pavel Sanaev, written much earlier, in 1994.

What is the movie about?

The plot tells about the family drama that unfolded around the eight-year-old boy Sasha. He is homeschooled; his grandmother forbids him to go out with friends, celebrate his own birthday, and most importantly, to see his mother. The child is constantly sick, he is taken to the doctors and forced to take many pills every day. In addition to Sasha, his grandfather, the famous Soviet actor Semyon Mikhailovich Savelyev, and his grandmother, Nina Antonovna, live in the house.

Grandma keeps the whole house in fear. She does not respect her daughter and considers her incapable of raising a child. Nina has constant tantrums and seizures, during which she insults her grandson and humiliates him in every possible way.

Throughout the film, the viewer is shown the details of the grandmother’s past, their life with her grandson in the present, and the mother’s struggle for her son.

The meaning of the film

Consider, for a start, the personality of the grandmother, almost the most central character. In her youth, she married actor Semyon Mikhailovich in order to move with him to Moscow and become an actress. Her hopes were not justified, since he married for a dispute, and not for love, respectively, an unhappy marriage arose. After the war began, during which the woman lost her first child. This greatly affected her psyche, and her husband locked her in a mental hospital for a while, which the woman still remembers as a heinous betrayal. After Nina becomes pregnant with her second child, she devotes herself to raising her daughter, but in the end she rejects her and takes away her son from her first marriage, Sasha.

Grandmother loves Sasha, but this love destroys both her and the object of this love. Unforgiven insults to life, to her husband, to fate make a real tyrant out of a woman, not satisfied with every step of her husband and grandson. Grandma takes care of Sasha. This can be seen from how much money she spends on doctors and medicines, but overprotection only makes the boy worse, depriving him of the opportunity to learn and grow in a team. Instead, every day he has to endure humiliation and abuse for the slightest trifle. The grandmother not only takes out her anger on the child, but also sees in him a way of self-realization, absolutely not understanding that such an attitude only destroys the child’s psyche and makes him unhappy.

Sasha also has a mother who wants with all her might to return the child to herself, but her grandmother serves as an obstacle to this. Olga was able to escape from the care of her mother and go to study as an actress, as Nina Antonovna did in her time. Her career was not crowned with success, but the second marriage turned out to be strong and reliable. Olga married the artist Anatoly, who occasionally drank; however, he is a kind and loyal man who, despite the insane difficulties with money and his wife’s parents, stays with her until the end. Grandfather and grandmother consider Olga and Anatoly to be alcoholics and people of very low moral values, therefore even short meetings with a child are forbidden to them. Throughout the film, the mother tries to get Nina to meet her son.

Sasha, listening to constant scolding in the direction of his parents, exclamations that he will surely die soon, involuntarily begins to think about his death, and only thoughts about his mother do not allow him to lose heart.

The figure of the grandfather in this story also requires analysis. From his past, it can be seen that he is a man of weak character. He does not like change and remains married to Nina Antonovna after years of despotism, because “he got used to her with his heart.” He is afraid of his wife and does not want to argue with her once again, so there is no one to protect his grandson from his grandmother.

The meaning of the film’s ending

As a result, the grandmother allows the mother to see her son, but during the meeting she breaks down: she throws the gift brought by her mother out the window, pushes Sasha away, screams and covers her own daughter with abuse. As a result, the mother and grandmother literally tear the boy to pieces, screaming at each other. Grandmother’s heart gives out and she falls down dead. The final scene is the scene of the funeral, in which both the husband and the daughter of the deceased are sincerely crying.

Sasha will now live with a loving mother and stepfather; he knows where the grandmother kept the money, so the family’s material problems are also solved. It was impossible to think of a better end for the boy, because he finally got rid of the psychological abuse and bullying that he had to endure for a long eight years.

This film clearly shows how excessive love and guardianship can result in bigotry and tyranny. Sasha’s grandmother is an example of a destructive parent who, by his actions, only harms the child, trying to keep him near him at any cost. The reasons for this may be lingering resentments, dissatisfaction with life, lack of other goals, a series of failures, or serious mental illness. The consequences of such upbringing are psychological trauma and phobias.

“Bury Me Behind the Baseboard” is a talentedly filmed, deep film with great actors, after watching which every parent will think about whether he is behaving the same way with his child, and, perhaps, will change for the better.
