The film Midsommar, which premiered in 2019, breaks the canons of horror that are familiar to us. At first, you might think that the director put some idea into the film regarding paganism and ancient beliefs, but in fact this film is about the separation of two loving people. Why the author decided to reveal this topic in this way – we will understand further.
In this film, you will not see standard horror pictures in which all the worst things happen in the dark. The most brutal scenes take place on a fine day when the sun completely floods the area. Such a discrepancy breaks the perception of the viewer, shocks him and, therefore, interests him to look further.
It speaks not only about the relationship between a man and a woman – it touches on the theme of a partial rebirth of the human soul. It’s about Dani. At the beginning of the film, she loses her family – her sister and parents commit suicide, and Dani is left all alone. At the end of the world, she finds what she once lost – she finds kindred souls in strangers.
Throughout the film, Dani witnesses her friends being brutally murdered. At the end, she is elected Queen of May and Christian is forced to have sex with Maya. Dani sees this and a wave of emotions covers her: she cries, screams, sobs, and almost naked girls scream with her. One gets the impression that in this way they help Dani to live through all the pain that she feels, help her endure the most critical moments, throw out everything superfluous, cleanse herself and continue to live on.
At the end of the film, the viewer sees a scene with nine sacrifices, one of which was Christian – Dani chose him. It is wrapped in bear skin and burned. After that, Dani feels a terrible relief – she smiles and understands that she has found people who are kindred in spirit. The girl understands that along with Christian and his death, all the pain and humiliation that she felt when she saw her Christian intercourse with Maya left. Throughout her relationship with Christian, she did not find support in him and at least some understanding, so she breathed a sigh of relief when her boyfriend was sacrificed. She was angry with him and offended, but now she feels nothing but inner joy and relief.
The meaning of the film is quite simple – it is about delivering the human soul from toxic relationships that constantly pulled down, did not give the opportunity to develop and build further Plans. If a person is uncomfortable in such a relationship, he feels that he is humiliated or devalued, it is important to leave on time. They will not bring joy to anyone, they will simply oppress and crush, affecting moral health and the desire to live. The film shows many episodes that contrast with each other: it is a snowy winter outside, and in the girl’s apartment there are many different paintings hanging on the walls, among which on canvas a girl kisses a huge bear on the nose.
There are also many plants, and this creates a “summer-winter” contrast. Such references to nature are not accidental: just as nature is renewed in cycles, so a person must ensure that his soul and body discard everything bad, annoying, outdated and take on a new look. Dani smiles at the end of the film, because she managed to renew her soul, even in such an unusual way. She realized that she was drawn to the bottom all this time and decided to throw it off herself in order to be reborn with renewed vigor and return to her old life. Previously, she had the feeling that she was alive, but now this feeling has disappeared somewhere. The climax was the scene of Christian’s intimacy with Maya – she pushed Dani to such a serious step.
The film deserves to be seen. The bloody scenes on the sunlit lawn alone are worth it! This is also a symbol that means only one thing: even in the most joyful and happy person at first glance, a bloody mess can be created inside. He deserves to be freed from these torments and start living a truly happy life. But how to do this – each person is looking for the best way for himself on his own, paying attention to the internal state of his soul.
