An article about the history of the song Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! I would like to start by reminding you that it is correctly called that, although the shortened version of Let It Snow has become more common over the years. But this is not the most interesting misconception associated with this composition.
Much more curious is the fact that Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!, being perhaps the most popular Christmas song in the world, initially had nothing to do with Christmas or New Year’s holidays.
The story of creation and the meaning of the song Let It Snow!
Don’t believe? Read the lyrics to Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! There is no word about December 25th or January 1st. Yes, what is there! Sammy Kahn and Jules Styne even composed it in Hollywood during the incredibly hot summer of 1945.
Kahn describes how this happened in Paul Zollo’s Songwriters on Songwriting:
Let It Snow was written by Hollywood and Vine on the hottest day of the year. I said to Jules Styne, “Why don’t we go to the beach and freshen up?” And he said, “Why don’t we stay here and write a winter song.” I sat down at the typewriter: “Oh, it’s so disgusting outside, but the fire in the fireplace is so delicious, and since we have nowhere to go, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.” So why do we need three “let it snow”? Why not two or four? Because three make up a lyric poem.
Now about the meaning of Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! In fact, it is not about Christmas, but about a couple of lovers cooing in front of the fireplace on a rainy winter evening. The guy does not want to leave, and he is even glad of the snowfall, which can be an excuse for him to linger for a while. As you can see, not the slightest hint of Christmas.

Let It Snow Lyrics
Oh, the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we’ve no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
It doesn’t show signs of stopping
And I brought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we finally kiss good-night
How I’ll hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I’ll be warm
The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we’re still good-bye-ing
But as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Lyrics Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Alternate

But the fire in the fireplace is so delicious
And since we have nowhere to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Snowfall won’t stop
And I brought some popcorn
And the lights are dimmed
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we do kiss goodbye
I do not want to go out into the street in bad weather,
But if you really hold me tight
I’ll be warm all the way home
The fire is slowly fading away
