When Amy Lynn Hartzler, lead singer of the American rock band Evanescence, was six years old, her three-year-old sister Bonnie died of a serious illness. It was not possible to fully recover from the loss of Amy even after many years. She dedicated several songs to her deceased sister, including the song Hello.
The story of creation and the meaning of the song Hello – Evanescence
In it, the singer describes the feelings she experienced upon learning of Bonnie’s death. As the lyrics say, she was indeed on the school playground when the phone rang bringing the bad news.
As a little girl, Amy Lynn did not at first realize what had happened, because the very idea of death was not completely clear to her. But over time, she realized how bitter the loss of such a loved one is.
She later recalled:
When this happened, my perception of the world changed. It sounds ridiculous, but that’s when I became an artist. Music is my attempt to change. These things can kill you, or you can handle them.

It has had an impact on my whole life and of course influenced my writing style, making me who I am. It’s one of those things that happens very early in your life and shapes you.
Amy Lee wrote Hello in the early 2000s. The song was included in the album Fallen, released in March 2003. It was not released as a single.

Hello Lyrics by Evanescence
Playground school bell rings again
rain clouds come to play again
Has no one told you she’s not breathing?
Hello I’m your mind giving you someone to talk to
hello
If I smile and don’t believe
Soon I know I’ll wake up from this dream
Don’t try to fix me I’m not broken
Hello I’m the lie living for you so you can hide
Don’t cry
Suddenly I know I’m not sleeping
Hello I’m I’m still here
All that’s left of yesterday
