It coincides with this hype around the millennium. But you know, we have to reset time, and it’s a great metaphor to start, which is like, “Let’s forget the past, and we’ll start again. Let’s forgive everyone and try again.” I think that’s a pretty positive message for the millennium.
Love will help us. She is the opposite of all the apocalyptic garbage that many people produce. I really feel like an antidote is needed and I hope my song was part of that antidote. Any sexual imagery in the song is pure coincidence, the product of vulgar minds. I enjoyed writing this song.
Stevie Wonder played harmonica on Brand New Day. Sting talked about how the idea to bring the legendary musician to the recording came about:
You know, I wrote this song, and it was like a shuffle. It reminded me of Stevie Wonder, and I said, “God, it would be great if Stevie played here.” And I made a phone call full of awe, because he is one of my idols. And he answered in the spirit: “Yes, I will come to New York and do it.” He showed up and played, kicking his butt.
